Monica Mills is a Jamaican-American poet, artist, consultant, and analyst based in Philadelphia. Originally from Maplewood, New Jersey, she graduated magna cum laude from Rutgers University with a BA in Political Science and English. Her writing explores the intersections of personal and collective experience, and has been featured in Claw & Blossom, Typehouse Magazine, Eunoia Review, FEED Lit. Mag., Cortland Review, and others. Monica is a poetry reader for West Trade Review and co-editor of the Jamaica Organization of New Jersey newsletter. She occasionally hosts free online poetry workshops and has traveled to various places, including spending a year teaching English in South Korea—an experience that enriched her understanding of language, culture, and community.

Monica’s poetry and creative endeavors are driven by a desire to reflect on the past and imagine a future rooted in empathy, resilience, and connection. Whether through writing, teaching, or consulting, she approaches all aspects of her work with the belief that creativity can offer both personal growth and collective transformation.

In addition to her artistic pursuits, Monica has long engaged in community work and collaboration, supporting efforts that align with her values. Her creative journey has been further shaped by experiences such as the 2022 PEN America Emerging Voices Fellowship, which deepened her commitment to artistic expression and social change. She continues to seek ways to integrate her passions into every aspect of her life.

Her path is one of balance: between quiet reflection and bold exploration, solitude and connection. Monica believes that it is through small, thoughtful steps—whether in art or in life—that we find the most meaningful moments of growth, understanding, and connection.
